Diablo 4 Leaderboard Update - Adjusted Tunnels and Slows Impact Scoring

March 19, 2024 4 minutes

The Gauntlet has successfully completed its second week, bringing us closer to the highly anticipated Diablo 4 feature that players have been requesting since its launch - the leaderboards. Now that The Gauntlet has settled into its weekly schedule, it's time for us to take a closer look at the final rankings from Week 2 and analyze what they reveal about each class.

Diablo 4 Gauntlet Build Tier List

Before we dive into the rankings, it's important to note that due to the restrictions of the leaderboards, which only record the Top 10 in the Hall of the Ancients, our data was taken from a snapshot of leaderboard scores around 8:30pm EST on Monday, March 18. Although the data has changed since then, we believe this snapshot provides a transparent way to discuss and analyze the overall averages for the week.

Additionally, many players have opted to make their profiles private on the leaderboards, posing a challenge in presenting the data accurately. We are currently exploring the best approach to ensure the data is presented as faithfully as possible. We welcome your feedback and suggestions in the comments below!

Week 2 Standard - Highest Known Build Scores vs Highest Class Score

As Week 2 comes to a close, the era of build variety seems to be fading away. With the exception of Druids, all classes have converged into a Meta Gauntlet Build. These builds have remained relatively unchanged since Week 1, with the Blizzard Sorcerer and various flavors of Charge Barbarians dominating their respective charts from the early days of the Gauntlet race. Druids, on the other hand, offer slightly more variety in their chosen builds.

Interestingly, Necromancers have dropped to the lower brackets this week, likely due to the difference in map layout. Classes with lower mobility have struggled in the cramped tunnels, while those with greater maneuverability have had an easier time. It will be intriguing to see if Necromancers can climb the ladder above Rogues this week, with a new map layout on the horizon.

The privacy settings on the leaderboards continue to pose a challenge. Although some Number 1 spots have public profiles now, there is still a significant percentage of players with private profiles. We will have to wait and see what solutions Blizzard introduces to address this issue in the future, but for now, we can only work with the data available to us.

Week 2 Standard and Hardcore - Top 100 Average Scores by Class

Week 2 has witnessed a considerable decrease in overall average scores for most classes. While Sorcerers have remained steady with a small dip, Necromancers have experienced a significant drop, allowing Druids to establish themselves firmly in the upper middle of the pack. Although the overall rankings have not changed, it is fascinating to observe the impact of map layout changes.

The spread-out layout of this map, along with enemies that are capable of slowing down players, has negatively affected classes with limited mobility. Necromancers have always been known for their slower pace since the launch of Diablo 4. Rogues, once again, stand out as an outlier, particularly in Hardcore mode, where their average scores and player count have dropped drastically, failing to even reach 100 legitimate entries.

It remains unclear whether Blizzard will utilize these scores for class tuning in the future. In World of Warcraft, DPS Rankings have proven useful for tuning purposes, suggesting that there is a precedent for using leaderboards as a tool for balancing classes. However, the extent of their impact on future metas in upcoming Seasons is yet to be determined.

  • How Was This Data Calculated?

While privacy settings prevent us from accessing every single build in the Top 10, we have analyzed the data that is visible and available to us through public profiles and overall scores. Inspecting each player's build, a crucial aspect of the leaderboards, is currently a challenge. Typically, the top-ranked player on a leaderboard has their settings set to private, making it impossible to gather information about their build, aside from their score.

For our rankings, we have compared known and unknown builds. We have collected data from builds and profiles that are not set to private and are therefore considered verifiable. We have compared this data to the number one score on each specific leaderboard. However, to fully analyze build data, Blizzard would need to implement changes that provide build visibility while maintaining player privacy if they deem it necessary.

The scores in the Standard and Hardcore charts represent the average of the Top 100 players from each class leaderboard. The Hardcore data required some adjustments as we discovered that players were ranked on the leaderboards with a score of 0. We removed these entries and reduced the overall pool to avoid falsely lowering the averages with 0 scores. The data samples for the two average charts were taken on Monday, March 18, at approximately 8:30pm EST, while the data for the build scores chart was obtained from the Hall of the Ancients during the weekly reset.
