Diablo 4 Trading System Severely Disrupts Balance between Console and PC Players

September 04, 2023 2 minutes

Many players find that their enjoyment in ARPGs comes from buying and selling items and making gold - and Diablo 4 is no different. Recently, however, players have noted that those who play Diablo 4 on console have a rather inconvenient disadvantage when it comes to trading - you can't select an exact gold amount for trade, and instead have to hold the select button as the amount slowly counts up.

The Console Trading Disadvantage

User ProximusCenturion recently created a thread on Reddit highlighting this issue, using screenshots from a Discord trading channel to demonstrate the problem. In the discussion, players talked about the challenges faced when trying to negotiate trades for large sums of gold. Instead of being able to type in or easily select a large amount, such as 1 Billion gold, console players must manually wait as the gold amount offered ticks up, while also being unable to precisely land on the desired amount.

As shown in the screenshot above, the player ended up going over the desired amount by almost half a million gold, and it took them a whopping 20 minutes to manually put that much gold in the trading window. This not only wastes the players' time but also creates frustration and potential imbalances in the trading system.

Possible Solutions

Given the inconvenience faced by console players, it is crucial to find a solution that allows for a more efficient and precise trading system. Here are a few possible solutions that could address this trading imbalance:

  • Implement a Number Entry System

One solution would be to introduce a number entry system where players can type in the exact amount of gold they want to trade. This would significantly speed up the trading process and ensure players can make precise offers without the need for manual counting. It would also level the playing field between console and PC players, as PC players already have this functionality.

  • Add Pre-Set Gold Increments

Another option is to include pre-set increments of gold that players can quickly select during trades. For example, instead of a linear count-up system, players could choose increments of 100,000 or 1 million gold. This would allow for faster trading while still providing some flexibility in the offered amounts.

  • Introduce a Slider or Slider-like Mechanism

A slider or slider-like mechanism could offer a visual representation of the gold amount being traded. Players could simply slide the marker to their desired amount, making the trade process smoother and more intuitive. This method would also eliminate the potential for human error in counting up large sums of gold.
