Player-Created System Idea: Runewords in Diablo 4

September 04, 2023 3 minutes

Those who played Diablo 2 may have many fond memories of Runewords - after all, taking socketed, otherwise useless items and transforming them into some of the most powerful gear the game has to offer is both alluring and thrilling for min-maxers and the lucky alike. It makes sense, then, that when early on in Diablo 4's production Runewords were planned to be included, players were thrilled that this well-loved system would be refreshed for the newest iteration of the Diablo franchise.

Runewords: A Cut Content

The disappointment, then, when Runewords were cut from Diablo 4 was equally felt among the community - and fans have been talking about what could have been ever since. Reddit user Charrageous is one such player, and has come up with a concept for how Runewords might work in Diablo 4 if they are ever implemented in the future!

A Fresh Take on Runewords

Charrageous' concept is an interesting take on the Runeword system. Not only can runes be upgraded to the next rarity in the same manner as Gems, but also a somewhat random "WILD" system would be implemented, allowing for a small chance at extremely powerful effects and abilities.

The concept, as shared on Reddit, includes visual representations of the proposed system. Players would be able to combine runes to create Runewords, just like in Diablo 2, but with the added feature of upgrading runes to higher rarities.

  • The "WILD" Factor

The most intriguing part of Charrageous' concept is the "WILD" system. This feature would introduce an element of surprise and excitement into the Runeword crafting process. When creating a Runeword, there would be a small chance for a random "WILD" effect to occur.

This "WILD" effect could result in incredibly powerful bonuses or unique abilities that would make the Runeword even more potent and desirable. However, due to the randomness of this system, players would not be able to rely on it consistently. It would be a pleasant surprise when it occurs, adding an extra layer of unpredictability to the game.

  • Player Feedback

Charrageous' Runewords concept has sparked discussions among the Diablo community. Many players are excited by the idea of Runewords making their way into Diablo 4 eventually. The concept not only pays homage to the beloved system from Diablo 2 but also introduces new mechanics that could enhance gameplay and create thrilling moments for players.

Of course, there are also players who prefer the classic Diablo 2 style of Runewords and would like to see a faithful recreation in Diablo 4. The debate continues as to which approach would be more enjoyable and fitting for the new game.

Final Thoughts

The concept of Runewords in Diablo 4 has ignited the imaginations of players, and Charrageous' concept offers an intriguing variation on the beloved system from Diablo 2. Whether it's through the proposed upgrade system or the addition of "WILD" effects, the concept presents new possibilities and potential for enriching the gameplay experience.

What are your thoughts on Runewords making their way into Diablo 4 eventually? Do you think this system would be fun, or would you prefer the classic Diablo 2 style of Runewords? Let us know in the comments below!
