Amirdrassil's Position in Azeroth - Introducing a Fresh Dragon Isles Area

November 18, 2023 4 minutes

Amirdrassil, the majestic World Tree, has found a new home in Azeroth, leaving the Emerald Dream behind. This significant event marks the culmination of the Guardians of the Dream storyline, which became available to players after defeating the formidable Fyrakk. As Amirdrassil takes root in the Dragon Isles, a whole new continent emerges, waiting to be explored. While the initial reception to this new location is mixed, it's clear that there is more to Amirdrassil than meets the eye.

The Night Elves' New Home

In the current state of the game, Amirdrassil remains mostly unpopulated. However, this is expected to change with the upcoming 10.2.5 patch. Many Night Elves who survived the Burning of Teldrassil have already relocated to the Dragon Isles. This begs the question: Is this new location truly the right place for the Night Elves to call home?

One of the primary concerns surrounding Amirdrassil's relocation is the tragic history of the Burning of Teldrassil. During the War of Thorns, the Night Elves faced genocide as the Horde sought to eliminate them from Kalimdor. While the Alliance ultimately claimed victory in the Fourth War, the Night Elves couldn't help but feel displaced. Losing Teldrassil meant losing a significant part of their identity and connection to Kalimdor as a whole.

Furthermore, the Dragon Isles being an expansion zone raises valid concerns. Traditionally, players only spend time in a zone during its corresponding expansion. Even major cities like Suramar or Boralus are often abandoned as players congregate in the current expansion's hub cities. As the Dragonflight expansion draws to a close, there is a legitimate fear that the Night Elves will be left behind, forgotten amidst the ever-changing landscape of Azeroth.

However, it seems that the Dragon Isles were chosen for Amirdrassil for practical reasons rather than narrative convenience.

A Practical Solution

When the Dragonflight expansion introduced dragonriding, it was an experimental feature. If it had proven unpopular, it might have never been implemented again. Yet, dragonriding has become a resounding success in World of Warcraft. As a result, it will become the standard method of travel for low-level characters and will be expanded to all old-world zones in the 10.2.5 update. Additionally, dynamic flying will be applied to all flying mounts in the 11.0 update.

However, incorporating dragonriding into the old world presented its own set of challenges. The old zones were not designed with this feature in mind, resulting in a capped maximum speed of 80% outside of the Dragon Isles. Over time, the game has evolved, and the old world has become outdated. Since the Cataclysm expansion's world revamp, Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms have remained largely untouched, with their storylines tied to an expansion that has long since concluded.

A complete world revamp is unlikely to happen, but Blizzard has taken steps to gradually update the game. Meanwhile, World of Warcraft seems to be positioning the Dragon Isles not just as an expansion-specific zone but as a central hub within the game. In the upcoming expansion, Dragonflight, new players will be introduced to dynamic flying as part of their initial quests. Any future zones will be designed with dragonriding in mind. This shift signifies a fundamental change within the game, with the Dragon Isles serving as a representation of this "new world."

The inhabitants of the Dragon Isles also support this notion. The Tauren of the Ohn'ahran Plains and the Netherwing of Outland have already relocated to this new continent. The continuous narrative surrounding Dragonflight insists that the Dragon Isles should not be dismissed or forgotten. Amirdrassil's new location further reinforces this point, suggesting that the Night Elves are not meant to be isolated but rather integrated into this evolving world.

Notably, the decision to snub Mount Hyjal, the original home of the Night Elves' World Tree Nordrassil, seems curious. While Nordrassil was destroyed in Warcraft III, it possesses a deep lore that predates Teldrassil. On a practical level, it may be easier to build a new zone around the concept of dragonriding and connect it to the existing Dragon Isles rather than transplant a new zone into the old world. The Dragon Isles appear to be pivotal in the game's future, unlike previous expansion-specific zones.

As of now, Amirdrassil remains relatively small in size compared to its predecessor, Teldrassil. Unlike Teldrassil's towering city at its pinnacle, Amirdrassil's tree resides at the center of the zone. The question arises: Will the tree continue to grow and evolve over the next twenty years of World of Warcraft? Could it potentially relocate once again, perhaps during another world-altering event like the awakening of Azeroth? Only time will tell.
