Analysis of The Internal Struggle: Anduin, Azeroth, and Our Identity

November 16, 2023 3 minutes

Sometimes, great stories begin with small, heartfelt moments. That's exactly what we witness in the cinematic trailer for The War Within. With serene music playing in the background, the scene opens with Anduin, the recognizable figure with his sword Shalamayne, seated in a desert. No action, no grand events, just Anduin, facing the darker sky. The camera pans over his aged face, showing the marks of time and experience. Anduin's grip on Shalamayne reveals his inner turmoil, symbolizing the themes of indecision and being caught between darkness and light.

Anduin closes his eyes and has a vision of Azeroth's World Soul, a planet covered in seas of Light with hints of red and purple, representing the Shadowflame and the Void. The World Soul whispers his name, and when he opens his eyes, we see the weariness and emotion in his face. The sound of approaching footsteps indicates someone's arrival, and Anduin, knowing who it is, shakes his head slightly, recalling a similar scene from a previous cinematic.

Anduin: "You're here to tell me we don't get to hide. Is that it?"

Anduin is referencing an earlier cinematic, Safe Haven, where Thrall is approached by Saurfang, urging him to return and take up leadership responsibilities in the Horde. This choice of Thrall in this scene is significant. Not only does Thrall represent the peace between the Horde and Alliance, but his return also symbolizes the return of Chris Metzen, the creator of much of World of Warcraft's lore. Anduin, like many long-time players of the game, represents those who have faced challenges and felt ready to give up on the world they once loved.

The Burden of Anduin

Anduin has been through a lot since the Shadowlands expansion, including being kidnapped and tortured by the Jailer. While he was saved from Domination magic, the trauma and darkness still haunt him. Anduin has struggled to find his place and reconnect with the Light. He feels tainted and dangerous, fearing that he can no longer unleash the power of the Light. This meeting with Thrall signifies a turning point for him.

The Call of Azeroth

The meeting between Anduin and Thrall is interrupted by a high-pitched screeching. They both experience physical pain, realizing that something urgent is calling out from the heart of Azeroth. We learn that many on Azeroth are having similar visions, propelled by a mysterious voice. Thrall reaches out his hand, showing his trust in Anduin, who, despite his inner struggles, decides to accept the gesture. Anduin acknowledges that, despite his personal doubts, he will stand with Thrall against whatever threat lies ahead.

The Cracked World

The cinematic ends with Anduin and Thrall witnessing the Sword of Sargeras in Silithus. The cracks in the world symbolize the upcoming Worldsoul Saga, with Azeroth's birth and internal wars being central to the story. Chris Metzen promises that this small, heartfelt moment will lead to something truly epic. According to an old prophecy, Anduin will lead an Army of Light, comprised of both Alliance and Horde, in the battle against the forces of Shadow. The fight for Anduin's soul may shape the destiny of their world.

Conclusion

The cinematic trailer for The War Within sets the stage for an epic conflict and the internal struggles faced by Anduin. Between the darkness and the light, Anduin must find his place and confront his own demons. With the return of Thrall, the symbol of the peace between Horde and Alliance, and the reemergence of Chris Metzen, World of Warcraft fans are filled with anticipation for the upcoming expansion. The battle for Anduin's soul is not only his personal journey but also a reflection of the battle for the soul of Azeroth itself.
