Concentration Mechanic: A Revamped Take on Inspiration in The War Within

April 18, 2024 4 minutes

Hello, adventurers! Today we have some exciting news for all the crafters in the realm of Dragonflight. The upcoming expansion, The War Within, is bringing some major changes to the Professions system. Inspired by player feedback and to enhance the crafting experience, the developers have reworked the Professions and are introducing a new system called Concentration. In this blog post, we will delve into the details of this new system and how it will replace the current Inspiration mechanic.

The Inspiration Dilemma

In previous updates, Professions underwent a significant overhaul, introducing Secondary crafting stats such as Inspiration and Resourcefulness. Inspiration allowed players to craft high-quality gear even if their Profession Skill level didn't technically allow it. However, this luck-based system became a point of contention among players. Crafters often relied on repeatedly crafting items until Inspiration struck, leading to inconsistent experiences for customers and a lack of decision-making for the crafter. Furthermore, the system relied heavily on RNG, which was not the intended goal of the Professions revamp.

The Concentration Solution

In response to these issues, The War Within introduces Concentration as a replacement for Inspiration. Concentration is a resource unique to each crafting profession, representing the crafter's ability to focus intensely on their recipes and exceed their normal capabilities. Crafters will have a separate pool of Concentration for each profession they possess.

With Concentration, crafters have agency and control over the quality of their crafts. By using a button in the crafting window, they can choose when to Concentrate, empowering their next craft(s) to automatically reach the next level of quality. This removes the element of luck and provides a more deterministic approach to crafting. Crafters no longer need to rely on chance to create high-quality items.

However, concentrating heavily requires paying a cost in terms of Concentration resource. The amount of Concentration consumed is determined by factors such as the proximity to the next quality tier, Profession Specializations, Finishing Reagents, and the type of craft being made (consumables, reagents, or equipment). The closer the crafter is to crafting a max-quality item, the less Concentration is needed.

To support crafters looking for ingenious breakthroughs while concentrating, a new stat called Ingenuity has been introduced. Ingenuity provides a chance for crafters to refund the Concentration spent on a craft. The higher the Ingenuity stat, the greater the chance of receiving a full refund. Outside of these Ingenuity-fueled refunds, Concentration will also automatically regenerate over time when not at its cap.

  • Concentration at a Glance:

  1. Crafters have a separate pool of Concentration for each profession.
  2. Concentration allows crafters to empower their crafts and automatically reach the next level of quality.
  3. The cost of concentrating depends on factors like proximity to the next quality tier, Profession Specializations, Finishing Reagents, and the type of craft being made.
  4. Ingenuity is a new stat that grants a chance to refund Concentration spent on a craft.
  5. Concentration will automatically regenerate over time when not at its cap.

The Concentration system aims to provide crafters with a more deterministic way to achieve high-quality crafts while still allowing flexibility. Whether it's compensating for a lack of skill, gear, or max-quality reagents, Concentration offers crafters more agency over their creations. Crafters now have the ability to make informed decisions and have a clearer understanding of the crafting process. Customers will also benefit from a more straightforward experience without the need for a statistical breakdown from the crafter.

Please note that the Concentration system is currently under development and will be available for testing in future builds of The War Within Alpha. As always, your feedback and insights are invaluable in shaping the final implementation of this new system.

We hope this introduction to the Concentration system has piqued your interest and given you a glimpse of the exciting changes coming to the Professions in The War Within. Stay tuned for more updates and get ready to craft your way to greatness!

Final Thoughts

The Concentration system opens up new possibilities for crafters in Dragonflight. With the removal of Inspiration and the introduction of Concentration, crafters will have more control, decision-making, and agency over their creations. The developers behind The War Within are committed to refining the crafting experience based on player feedback and creating a system that captures the essence of the crafting fantasy. We eagerly await the release of The War Within, where crafters can embark on their crafting journeys with renewed excitement and determination.
