Investigation of Chronowarden Hero Talents: Balancing Time Manipulation and Potential Overload

December 28, 2023 5 minutes

This past week, Blizzard revealed new Hero Talent Trees in a First Look at the new system coming with The War Within expansion. As an avid player of the game, I am excited to share my thoughts and early review of the Chronowarden Hero Talents for Preservation in this blog post written by WowCarry.

Hero Talents Overview

In patch 10.2, Preservation offers two key playstyles - an Echo-focused one and a Blossom-focused alternative. With the introduction of the Chronowarden Hero Talent Tree, it was expected to have a strong emphasis on Echo or Bronze-centric abilities. However, to its credit, the reality of this tree is a little more agnostic than expected.

Chronowarden, as the name suggests, is an excellent thematic fit for the class and offers several key nodes that enhance gameplay. Let's take a closer look at some of the most interesting sections of the tree:

  • Chrono Flame & Afterimage

The Chrono Flame ability is enhanced with Bronze magic, allowing it to repeat a portion of the damage or healing dealt to the target in the last 5 seconds. Afterimage, on the other hand, empowers spells to send up to 3 Chrono Flames to targets, with a chance to trigger Essence Burst.

This combination of abilities adds an interesting twist to empower spells, turning them into essence burst generators and providing an additional direct heal based on the healing dealt to the target. While it may not be an exact replica of the current 2pc bonus, it offers a similar playstyle with some unique elements.

  • Careful Contemplation

This node increases intellect and stamina by 10% while also increasing cooldown times by the same amount. The trade-off is well worth it, as the bonus to intellect and stamina outweighs the minimal cooldown increase. It's important to note that this node may undergo further tweaking during testing to ensure a balanced power scaling.

  • Instability Matrix

With Instability Matrix, each time you cast an empowered spell, unstable time magic reduces its cooldown by up to 15 seconds. While the concept seems intriguing, the randomness of the cooldown reduction range may pose challenges for healers who rely on consistency. Adjustments may be necessary to strike a balance between RNG and gameplay fluidity.

  • Threads of Fate

Casting an Essence ability during Temporal Burst triggers a thread of fate for a nearby ally, enabling them to echo their damage and healing spells for a percentage of the original amount. This offers an interesting way to bridge the gap between bronze and green Blossom builds by providing added DPS potential. However, the growing number of support abilities may make it challenging to evaluate personal performance during gameplay.

  • Golden Opportunity

Golden Opportunity gives Echo a 25% chance to not cost Essence. This talent enhances Echo coverage and provides more reliable results compared to pure chance-based mechanics. Given the already existing RNG elements in Preservation, a more controlled format with Deck-based RNG could potentially improve gameplay experience.

Is Chronowarden Powerful? Fun?

Without concrete numbers and final balancing, it is difficult to determine the true power level of the Chronowarden tree. However, based on the available information, it seems promising. The tree offers several notable enhancements, including a node that provides a 10% increase in damage and healing at a minimal cost. Additionally, it introduces various minor stat buffs and intriguing utility abilities.

Comparing it to existing effects, such as Aberrus 2 set bonus and Amirdrassil 2 set bonus, the Chronowarden tree appears to be a strong contender. However, it's important to keep in mind that the overall picture may change with class changes, base talent adjustments, and the introduction of a new tier set in future updates.

Twenty Effects, Four Spells

One aspect worth noting is the increasing number of effects tied to the same few base spells within the game. While it streamlines the number of buttons players need to manage, it also results in the loss of clarity regarding each ability's purpose and identity. Players may find themselves unsure of whether to use certain spells as part of their healing rotation or for other purposes. As the number of effects associated with spells grows, it becomes challenging to assess their effectiveness at a glance.

In the Chronowarden tree, additional spell hooks are introduced, further complicating gameplay. Some spells gain new hooks or lose their original identity as they become overloaded with various effects. This complexity may make it difficult for new players to grasp the true potential of each ability without extensive knowledge and guidance.

Healer Power Scaling

The issue of healer power scaling has been a topic of discussion within the community. Hero talents, with their significant power additions, may result in highly inflated healing potential. To counterbalance this power creep, Blizzard will need to consider scaling health pools accordingly. As the expansion progresses, further adjustments and fine-tuning will be necessary to ensure a balanced and engaging healing experience for players.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I am optimistic about the direction in which Chronowarden is headed. It offers a compelling and engaging tree that caters to various Evoker builds, effectively blending thematic elements and utility mechanics. With further iteration and fine-tuning throughout the testing phases, the Chronowarden tree has the potential to become one of the strongest hero talent trees available. I eagerly look forward to the release of The War Within and the arrival of the Ruby Adept tree, which will undoubtedly have a lot to live up to. The new Hero Talents will be there before you notice, make sure your Dracthyr is ready and leveled up for the upcoming challenges.
