Reflecting on Restoration Shaman in Dragonflight & War Within Wishlist - An Editorial

January 23, 2024 4 minutes

Hello, fellow gamers! Welcome to a detailed retrospective of the Restoration Shaman's journey in the popular game Dragonflight. Today, we're going to take a closer look at how this spec performed throughout each of the three seasons in this expansion, how it evolved over time, and what key improvements are still needed to make Restoration Shaman truly great. Join me, WowCarry, as we delve into the highs and lows of this unique healing class.

The Journey So Far

Restoration Shaman has had an eventful time in Dragonflight. In Season 1, we got off to a weak start in Raids but gained popularity in high-level Mythic+ keys. However, it wasn't until after some buffs and changes in Season 2 that we really made an impact. We were even featured in the Race to World First with a Resto Shaman securing a World 3rd kill! Unfortunately, Season 3 hasn't been as favorable, with other healers dominating the Mythic+ scene.

While Restoration Shamans bring utility, cooldowns, and decent damage to the table, there are a few hurdles holding us back from being in high demand. Let's explore these issues and discuss possible improvements.

The Impact of Augmentation Evoker and Party/Raid Buffs

One of the main challenges for Restoration Shaman is our lack of Party/Raid buffs. While other classes offer valuable buffs like Power Word: Fortitude or Mark of the Wild, Shamans have Windfury Totem as their only Party/Raid buff. This puts us at a disadvantage compared to classes that bring both utility and buffs to the group. The introduction of Augmentation Evoker in Dragonflight also affected our utility as some of our abilities became less sought after. We need these buffs to remain relevant and valuable in group compositions.

Annoying Interactions and Talent Tree Dilemmas

Restoration Shaman has its fair share of talent and ability interactions that need addressing. For example, we have talents like Flash Flood, Spiritwalker's Tidal Totem, and Tidebringer that interfere with the cast time reduction of Chain Heal, wasting valuable time. Undulation is another spell that is hard to track effectively.

Moreover, our talent tree could use some adjustments. We have a top-heavy tree, with talents like Deluge, Water Totem Mastery, and Flash Flood requiring excessive points. The middle section lacks attractive choices, leaving most points to be spent on Chain Heal buffs. The capstone section also needs improvement, with certain talents being underwhelming compared to others. It's important to create a more balanced and rewarding talent tree that offers meaningful choices for players.

The War Within Hero Talents

Although details about The War Within are still scarce, we already know the names of the three Hero Specs available for Shaman: Stormbringer, Farseer, and Totemic. While the specific Hero Specs available to Restoration Shaman are unclear, we can speculate on what these talents might focus on.

If the Farseer Hero Spec is an option, it could focus on summons and iconic Shaman spells like Far Sight and Chain Lightning. Stormbringer could revolve around storm-related abilities, such as Healing Rain and Wellspring. Lastly, Totemic seems like a natural fit for Restoration Shaman due to our reliance on totems like Cloudburst Totem and Healing Stream Totem. Both Stormbringer and Totemic provide exciting possibilities for their respective playstyles.

Ultimately, The War Within has the potential to bring exciting changes and new opportunities for Restoration Shamans. We eagerly await more information on the expansion and how it will shape the future of our beloved spec.

Conclusion

Restoration Shaman has come a long way in Dragonflight, but there's still room for improvement. By addressing issues with Party/Raid buffs, talent interactions, and the overall talent tree, Restoration Shaman can become a more desirable and rewarding spec to play. The upcoming expansion, The War Within, presents an opportunity for the spec to evolve further and provide fresh challenges and possibilities.

Thank you for joining me on this retrospective journey through the Restoration Shaman's adventure in Dragonflight. Keep an eye out for more updates and news as we eagerly await The War Within. Until then, happy gaming!
