Significant Decrease in Crafted Gear Power in Dragonflight Season 3

September 08, 2023 2 minutes

In the latest update for Patch 10.2 PTR, WowCarry has revealed some exciting details about Dragonflight Season 3. Among the changes, players can expect a larger increase between tiers, as well as some massive nerfs to Crafted Gear.

The Increase Between Tiers

One of the key points to note in this PTR build is the significant increase in item levels. While typically this increase is around 26 item levels, in Dragonflight Season 3, players will face a staggering 39 item level increase. This means that entering the season, players will be more undergeared than usual.

The Crafted Gear Nerfs

Our team has datamined some interesting information about the Enchanted Crests used for Crafted Gear. Here are the revealed item levels for each:

Enchanted Crest Item Level Cap
Enchanted Whelpling's Dreaming Crest 434
Enchanted Wyrm's Dreaming Crest 463
Enchanted Aspect's Dreaming Crest 473

As you can see, the new Aspects crafted crest reaches a maximum item level of 473. How does this compare to Season 3 rewards?

  • Mythic+ Great Vault 12-14s:

  • Item Level: 473

  • Mythic+ End of Dungeon 19-20s:

  • Item Level: 470

  • Heroic Raid:

  • Item Level: 467 - 476

On the other hand, the new Wyrms crafted crest has a maximum item level of 463. Here's how it compares:

  • Mythic+ Great Vault 6-7s:

  • Item Level: 463

  • Mythic+ End of Dungeon 15-16s:

  • Item Level: 463

  • Normal Raid:

  • Item Level: 454 - 463

Unless Crafted Gear can be upgraded using Crests in Season 3, the maximum rank of crafted gear from Aspects is only marginally better than end-of-dungeon rewards for completing a +19 or +20 and equivalent to heroic raid gear. It falls far from being considered Best-in-Slot.

It's worth noting that Crests still seem to drop from the same Mythic+ levels or Raid difficulties as before.

Thoughts and Opinions

Many players believed Crafted Gear was extremely powerful, perhaps even overpowered, in Season 2. However, nerfing Crafted Gear to this extent seems to render it almost worthless after just a few weeks. With the Mythic track extended to x/4 in Season 3, crafted gear would no longer be considered Best-in-Slot. Although a slight nerf could have been expected, reducing crafted gear to the equivalent of 441 or 444 in Season 2, this much of a nerf seems to completely devalue the impact of crafted gear altogether. It's a disappointing outcome for crafters.

Of course, it's essential to remember that these item levels are datamined, and we're only on the first PTR build. It's possible that the item levels could change in the future.

Another interesting topic to consider is the use of Embellishments on the nerfed crafted gear, which will now be at least 13 item levels lower. Be prepared for the upcoming new raid with WowCarry!
