Speculating the Next Expansion: What's in Store for World of Warcraft's 11.0?

October 26, 2023 3 minutes

Blizzcon is just around the corner, and WoW players are eagerly anticipating the announcement of a new expansion. Speculation has been rampant about what the next expansion will entail, and we have some ideas based on the clues Blizzard has given us so far.

The Underground Looming Threat

One theory suggests that the next expansion, possibly titled 11.0, will take us underground to Khaz Algar. This theory is supported by the strong link between underground themes and old god themes. In a previous questline, players encountered N'Zoth and heard his whispers, which seem more significant now in light of recent events. These whispers hint at a journey to the deep places and the dark waters flowing in someone's wake.

Additionally, there is a mention of an underground area called Khaz Algar in the lore book Observational Report: Earthen. This area is inhabited by a faction of titan-forged Earthen who show resistance to the curse of flesh. Despite their differences from the Dwarves, the Earthen of Khaz Algar have similar cultural traits, indicating a possible connection between the two groups.

The Mysterious Xal'atath

Another intriguing theory revolves around Xal'atath, a controversial lore book discovered in the Forbidden Reach. The book mentions the existence of a fifth Old God, contradicting previous lore that suggested there were only four Old Gods. The book also suggests that Xal'atath is all that remains of a forgotten Old God or the claw of Y'Shaarj.

Xal'atath has since escaped its physical blade form after making a deal with N'Zoth, leading to speculation that the deal was to save N'Zoth's life. This theory suggests that Xal'atath and N'Zoth may play a significant role in the upcoming expansion.

Furthermore, the Naga's prophecy, mentioned in the book A Song of the Depths, speaks of the Harbinger gathering the children of the first flesh to reclaim what was lost. This prophecy aligns with the Old Gods' desire to reclaim Azeroth and complete her awakening as a Dark Titan of the Void. It is possible that the next expansion will involve a journey into the depths of Azeroth to save her from the grips of the Old Gods.

Other Possibilities

While the above theories seem most plausible, there are other potential storylines for the next expansion. One theory suggests a visit to Avaloren, a mysterious western land mentioned in the lore book Wreckage Analysis Report. This theory gained traction due to the book Return of the Nightsquall, which speaks of a pirate known as the Nightsquall who successfully crossed the western seas and returned with treasures. The inclusion of nautical-themed items in a recent subscription offer further supports this theory.

Another possibility is a continuation of the Bronze Dragonflight storyline, particularly focusing on Nozdormu's destiny of transforming into Murozond. The recent quests involving the Infinite Dragonflight and the rejoining of Eternus with the Bronze Dragonflight suggest that there is more time-traveling adventure to come.

A Titan civil war is also a potential storyline, as questioning the Titans has been a recurring theme in recent quests. Conflicts between the rigid Order represented by Aman'Thul and Odyn and the more open-minded Order represented by Eonar and Alexstrasza could ultimately lead to a confrontation.

Lastly, there have been hints of world changes coming to Azeroth. Various quests and events have foreshadowed the return of the ancient forest, the reclamation of Undercity by the Forsaken, the resettlement of the Netherwing Dragonflight, and the regrowth of World Tree Amirdrassil. These changes could be significant aspects of the next expansion.

Final Thoughts

As Blizzcon approaches, the excitement and speculation surrounding the next WoW expansion continue to grow. While the theories presented here are based on available clues, only time will tell what Blizzard has in store for us. Whether it's an underground adventure, the rise of a fifth Old God, the exploration of Avaloren, a continuation of the Bronze Dragonflight storyline, or something entirely unexpected, WoW players are eagerly awaiting the announcement at Blizzcon. And while Blizzard still keep it a secret why not to prepare your characters for the upcoming Guardians of the Dream with some of our leveling services.
