Discovering the Arathi Tribe in The War Within

The Arathi tribe holds a prominent role in The War Within, but how much do we actually know about this fascinating human tribe and their connection to the renowned Arathor Empire? Like all humans, the Arathi trace their origins back to the vrykul. Centuries ago, an Arathi warlord named Thoradin united the various human tribes of the Eastern Kingdoms, giving rise to the mighty Arathor Empire. This empire formed a strong alliance with the high elves of Quel'Thalas and successfully defeated the Amani Trolls.

As time passed, Arathor eventually split into the Seven Kingdoms, with Thoradin's descendants settling in the south and establishing the kingdom of Stormwind. Anduin Lothar, the legendary hero who met his demise during the Second War, was known as the last known descendant of Thoradin.

Introducing the Arathi Tribe in The War Within

The Arathi tribe we encounter in The War Within are not direct descendants of Thoradin, as far as our knowledge goes. According to our exclusive interview with Anne Stickney and Tina Wang, this particular tribe diverged from the original empire long before Arathor split into the Seven Kingdoms.

Guided by a vision of a falling star, this splintered tribe of Arathi has arrived in the zone of Harrowfall. Deep beneath the earth, Harrowfall is illuminated by a crystal sun, the very subject of their vision. One remarkable aspect of the Arathi tribe is their unwavering devotion to the Light, even utilizing the Sacred Flame to power their airships.

During the Blizzcon What's Next panel, it was revealed that ever since the Arathi's arrival in Khaz Algar, they have found themselves trapped within the zone, contending with the constant threat of sea monsters and invading nerubians. As we venture into Harrowfall, we will witness the crystal sun gradually fading into darkness for certain periods, presenting an unprecedented challenge. In addition to these struggles, the Arathi are currently dealing with internal divisions within their ranks.

At this stage, we do not possess detailed information regarding the nature of the crystal sun. However, it is hard not to draw similarities to the Light's Heart from the Legion expansion, which served as the vessel for the soul of Illidan Stormrage and played a crucial role in his resurrection. Although distinct in their own ways, both items were discovered through a falling star, share a crystal-like appearance, and harness the power of the Light. It is likely that the naaru, with their deep knowledge of the Light, hold key insights into this intriguing crystal.

As mentioned by Anne Stickney, Anduin Wrynn, named after Thoradin's last descendant, will spend time in Harrowfall. This comes as no surprise considering Anduin's ongoing struggle with his connection to the Light, which he questions his worthiness of. Perhaps the Arathi tribe can offer him guidance, although the fact that their own sun has been touched by darkness recently could complicate matters even further.

Final Thoughts

The Arathi tribe brings a rich history and a unique storyline to The War Within. As we delve into the depths of Harrowfall alongside the Arathi, we can expect gripping tales of bravery, spiritual conflicts, and the unraveling mysteries surrounding the crystal sun. Only time will tell how this all plays out, but it is certain that the Arathi will leave a lasting impression on the journey through The War Within.
