The Future of WoW in 2024: Exploring Amirdrassil, the Final Dragonflight Raid

October 25, 2023 3 minutes

Hey there, WoW enthusiasts! With Patch 10.2 just around the corner and Season 3 on its way, the anticipation for what lies beyond is growing among the player base. What will happen after the Emerald Dream storyline concludes? When can we expect the next content patch or expansion? Let's dive into the details and explore what might be in store for the future of Dragonflight.

The Final Tier Signs

This topic has become a hot discussion among the WoW community due to a couple of compelling pieces of evidence that have surfaced recently. The first clue comes from a datamined discovery a few weeks ago, revealing a cosmetic reward for defeating the final raid boss on heroic mode. Instead of the usual mount reward, this time it appears to be a Dragonriding manuscript called the "Renewed Proto-Drake: Embodiment of Shadowflame." Players can earn this item through a questline upon their first heroic or mythic difficulty defeat of Fyrakk.

While Blizzard hasn't officially confirmed this, it is likely that obtaining this manuscript will no longer be possible once the next expansion launches.

The second piece of evidence to support the theory of the impending conclusion of Dragonflight is the addition of a permanent augment rune in Patch 10.2 reputation. Once players reach Renown 18 with a new faction called the Dream Wardens, they can purchase the "Dreambound Augment Rune" for a hefty sum.

Since the introduction of augment runes in Warlords of Draenor, each expansion's final tier has featured a non-consumable version of the rune. With these two elements in play, it seems plausible to assume that Patch 10.2 and Season 3 will mark the end of Dragonflight raids, but what about the expansion as a whole?

What Comes Next?

During our datamining exploration of Patch 10.2, we stumbled upon a model for an additional Gladiator mount. Each tier or season in Dragonflight has revolved around one of the major flights, such as the Red flight, the Black flight, and now the Green flight in Season 3. However, this extra Gladiator mount is distinctly themed after the Blue Dragonflight. It could be an unused mount asset, but it's also possible that it's a hint towards the Season 4 Gladiator mount.

In interviews and discussions about Shadowlands, Blizzard has mentioned their satisfaction with Shadowlands' Fated Season 4, which served as a bridge between expansions. This suggests that a similar experiment could occur for Dragonflight, potentially leading to a Season 4 that revisits previous Dragonflight raids.

WoW 2024 Timeline and Next Expansion

So, where does this leave us? Based on the information we have regarding Dragonflight seasons and Shadowlands Season 4, we can speculate on the following release schedule:

Early November 2023 Patch 10.2 and Season 3
May 2024 Patch 10.3 and Season 4
September 2024 Patch 11.0
November 2024 Next Expansion Releases

This timeline assumes that Dragonflight seasons typically last around six months, and the duration is unlikely to change for the final season. However, Season 4, similar to Shadowlands, may be shorter, possibly lasting around four months instead of six.

In addition to these major patches and expansions, there are often minor patches that introduce significant content between seasons. Expanding on the timeline mentioned above, we could expect the following:

  • Early November 2023: Patch 10.2 and Season 3
  • January 2024: Patch 10.2.5
  • March 2024: Patch 10.2.7
  • May 2024: Patch 10.3 and Season 4
  • July 2024: Patch 10.3.5
  • September 2024: Patch 11.0
  • November 2024: Next Expansion Releases

Three-Tier Expansions

Based on these observations and Blizzard's commitment to delivering streamlined content, it's likely that the next expansion will follow a structure similar to Dragonflight and Shadowlands. This would entail three tiers, or seasons, of content, followed by a concluding "celebration" season that brings all the expansion's content together.
