WoW Revival Catalyst - Gear Upgrades and Updates to the System

June 29, 2023 6 minutes

Introduction

The Dragonflight expansion in World of Warcraft has once again awakened the Catalyst with some key differences in Season 2 compared to its previous versions in Season 1 and Shadowlands. The process of earning charges and the type of loot usable have undergone significant changes, which can seem a bit puzzling at first. This article will provide a comprehensive guide to understand how the Revival Catalyst functions in Season 2 of Dragonflight to ensure you complete your 4 tier-set bonus as quickly as possible.

Understanding the Revival Catalyst

If you're wondering about the Catalyst, it is a tool that allows you to transform certain gear into tier-set gear. This gear comes with potent bonuses that activate when you equip two and four pieces of the set. These bonuses are incredibly powerful, often leading many classes and specs to prefer lower item level gear just to activate the four-set bonuses. With the season underway, the Revival Catalyst is once again available, making it easier for everyone to access their tier-set gear as the season progresses.

Locating the Catalyst

Like in Season 1, the Catalyst can be found near Tyrhold. To assist you in reaching there, there is an introductory quest called Catalyst Revival, available by the fountain in Valdrakken city. This isn't a required quest, but it can help mark the Catalyst's location on your map.

Acquiring Charges in Season 2

In Season 2, acquiring charges has become more straightforward. There's no need to complete a weekly quest as in Season 1; instead, you passively accrue one charge per week. These charges are character-specific, and spending a charge on one character does not affect any other character on your account. This accumulation is retroactive, meaning if you level a new character in a few weeks, they should have all their charges when they hit max level, enabling them to start converting gear right away.

Using the Catalyst

To use the Catalyst, you need a piece of gear. However, not all gear can be used with the Catalyst. Gear from outdoor world content, such as quest rewards, rare drops, and World Quest rewards, are unfortunately incompatible with the Catalyst. On the other hand, typical seasonal gear like Mythic plus dungeons, the Aberrus raid, or rated PVP gear works perfectly with the Catalyst. Another source for eligible gear is the Zaqali Elders World boss in Zaralek Caverns and the Fyrakk Assault, where you can loot high item-level gear.

Transmog and Stat Change Uses

Even after collecting and activating your four-set bonus, the Revival Catalyst can be beneficial for transmog purposes and stat change. For transmog, the Catalyst can be used to get lower tiers or higher tiers of the tier-set transmog than what you currently have access to. For stat change, you can use the Catalyst to change the stats on a piece of gear, depending on your best stats.

Final Thoughts

The Revival Catalyst in Season 2 provides players with numerous opportunities to upgrade and improve their gear. Regardless of the content you engage in, with a variety of gear eligible for the Catalyst, everyone should be able to complete their four-set bonus in the coming weeks. As always, remember to double-check everything you put into the Catalyst and the resulting item to avoid any potential gear downgrades.
