Xal'atath and the Season of Discovery: Unveiling the Enigmatic Figure

December 27, 2023 3 minutes

Xal'atath, the Harbinger of the Void, is undoubtedly set to play a significant role in the upcoming expansions of World of Warcraft's retail version. However, players have been wondering if Xal'atath has made an appearance in the Classic version of the game during the Season of Discovery. In this blog post, we will delve into the Void-Touched Questline and investigate the mysterious presence of Xal'atath in Classic.

The Void-Touched Questline

During Classic's Season of Discovery, players have the opportunity to obtain powerful Epic items known as Void-Touched Armaments. The questline for acquiring these items involves encountering a mysterious Shadowy Figure who bears a striking resemblance to Xal'atath. According to a Dead Twilight Cultist, the first step in the questline is to figure out how to communicate with them. The cultist reveals that he was approached by a sinister presence that compelled him to create "The Box".

The cultist describes the encounter with Xal'atath in his dreams, where she showed him the wonders of the Box, making everything better and stronger. However, he soon realizes that the Box is hungry and comes at a great cost. The cultist, fearing the repercussions of the Box falling into the wrong hands, implores the player character to find and destroy it using the power of Light.

With the guidance of the Shadowy Figure, players embark on a journey to destroy the Box, which ultimately leaves behind a Shard of the Void. The Shard is a tiny sliver of perfectly black crystal that seems to draw in and consume light. It is through this Shard that the Shadowy Figure offers to teach players how to create Void-Touched Armaments.

Like Xal'atath, the Shadowy Figure takes the form of a female elf shrouded in shadows. However, she is specifically a Night Elf or High Elf and not one of the newer Void Elves. In an intriguing image posted on Reddit, speculations arise that the Shadowy Figure could indeed be Xal'atath, as she is depicted holding a curved dagger.

Is It Xal'atath?

The question remains whether the Shadowy Figure is indeed Xal'atath. While Xal'atath would have been trapped within the Blade at this time in Classic, it is plausible that she could take on an avatar. In fact, in Battle for Azeroth, we witness Xal'atath assume the appearance of a Void Elf while still trapped in the Blade, only to be released later. Therefore, all Xal'atath would truly require is a powerful void relic and a suitable vessel.

Furthermore, Xal'atath has demonstrated the ability to travel through different timelines. During the Dawn of the Infinite dungeon, we witness her departing with Iridikron in a past setting. If current Xal'atath desired to have some fun with players participating in the Classic Season of Discovery, there would be no reason why she couldn't traverse time and make an appearance.

Ultimately, Classic players who have completed the questline and destroyed the Box are left with a powerful item but also a lingering sense of unease. Despite the relief of destroying the Box, players can't shake the feeling of being watched. It remains to be seen if this character will receive further lore in Classic or if any references will be made to her in the retail version of the game.
