Visualizing The War Within: An Artistic Interview with Hirumaredx

April 20, 2024 4 minutes

In an exclusive interview with Lead Visual Development Artist Gabriel Gonzalez and Senior Narrative Designer Abigail Manuel, we were given a sneak peek into the art, story, world building, and zones of the upcoming expansion, The World Within! As the excitement builds, let's dive into some of the fascinating details that were shared.

The Visual Class Fantasy

One of the main objectives for tier sets in The War Within is to embrace the class fantasy of visual design. Each set is designed to add depth and flavor to the class, taking the character's fiction to a whole new level. Whether it's the radiant light beams of the Chosen of Elune Balance Druids or the unique customizations for the Earthen race like stone beards and glittering gems, every class is getting special attention to enhance their visual appeal.

Mount Customizations

The Delve rewarded Gyrocopter is just the beginning when it comes to customizable mounts in The War Within. The development team is actively exploring more opportunities to introduce additional mount customizations, allowing players to truly make their mounts their own.

Underground Zone Diversity

Creating distinct zones, especially when most of them are set underground, is a challenge that the team is eager to tackle. With two decades of zones in World of Warcraft, it's important to push the boundaries and create a completely unique environment. One example is the Hallowfall zone, where a giant crystal acts as a proxy sun, injecting interesting identities into the underground landscape. The team is also focusing on incorporating varied architecture and subverting expectations to make each zone feel fresh and exciting.

The zones in The War Within will be similar in size to those of Dragonflight, filled with interesting landmarks like the crystal sun in Hallowfall that will even change as the story progresses. From the Foundation Hall in the Isle of Dorn to Storm Perch, used to summon special gryphon riders, each location has its own importance and contributes to the overall immersive experience.

To break up the underground environment, unique day/night cycles and weather patterns will be introduced. These cycles will alter the appearance of the zones throughout the day, providing a dynamic and immersive experience for players.

Story and World Building

The narrative in The War Within revolves around Xal'atath, the main villainous character. While there's no direct tie-in with the Season of Discovery, players can expect to encounter Xal'atath frequently as they progress through the expansion. The development team remained tight-lipped about other future characters, leaving players in suspense.

Customization is a crucial part of player identity, and the team is continuously exploring ways to expand on this aspect. While there aren't any additional visage forms planned for the Dracthyr race just yet, it's something that may be considered in the future. Additionally, Magni is set to play a central role in The War Within, with his story evolving and intertwining with the fate of Azeroth.

Visual Customization and Transmog

Player feedback regarding the visibility of character hair under helmets has been heard loud and clear. The character team is actively working on creative solutions to allow players to showcase their hairstyles without sacrificing the coolness of wearing a helmet. The goal is to provide players with the best of both worlds. Furthermore, more visible wrist customizations, like recent corsage additions, are being explored, as long as they don't cause complications with clipping or armor creation.

The Earthen and Kobolds

The Earthen, an ancient race abandoned by the titans and later becoming Dwarves, play a significant role in The War Within. Delving into their history and society, players will uncover the transition from constructs to living beings and witness the consequences of this transformation. The Earthen's struggle, which serves as a central theme of the expansion, will come to life through a captivating campaign dungeon called the Rookery.

As for the Kobolds, these classic WoW creatures have been given special attention in The War Within. With a secluded society and their intriguing use of wax, the designers had fun exploring their evolution and culture. Players can expect a not-so-sophisticated civilization that has reached its zenith.

Conclusion

The World Within promises to be an exciting expansion that delves deep into the class fantasy, visually captivating zones, and immersive storytelling. With the inclusion of customizable mounts, the expansion takes player identity to new heights. The challenges of creating distinct underground environments are being met with innovative solutions and unexpected twists. And with compelling characters like Xal'atath and Magni driving the narrative, players are in for an unforgettable journey. Get ready to step into The World Within and experience a whole new chapter in World of Warcraft!
