Tempering: Enhancing the Crafting System in Diablo 4 Season 4

March 20, 2024 2 minutes

During their Season 4 Campfire Chat livestream, Blizzard unveiled an exciting new crafting system that will debut in Diablo 4's upcoming Season 4. Known as "Tempering," this crafting system promises to revolutionize item customization and enhancement in the game. Together with the Masterworking crafting system, Tempering will replace the current "Upgrade" system and introduce new ways for players to improve their items.

Season 4 PTR Campfire Chat Summary

The Tempering crafting system allows players to add powerful affixes to both Rare and Legendary items. These special affixes, known as "Tempered Affixes," can be found on Temper Manuals, which drop from a variety of content in Diablo 4. These manuals contain four different affixes, and when combined with an item, one of these affixes will be randomly added.

However, it's important to note that Tempered Affixes cannot be added to Unique and Uber Unique items, ensuring a balanced gameplay experience.

Temper Manuals come in different categories, such as Weapons, Offensive, Defensive, Utility, Mobility, and Resource, similar to Aspects. These categories determine which items can be combined with the Temper Manual. For instance, a Mobility Temper Manual can be applied to Boots and Amulets, enhancing their capabilities in terms of movement.

Ancestral Items, a new addition in Diablo 4, can hold up to two Tempered Affixes, providing even more customization options for players.

In addition, items in the game will feature Tempering Durability, also referred to as Temper Rerolls. This parameter determines the number of times a player can reroll a Tempered Affix, allowing for further fine-tuning of item attributes.

Similar to normal affixes, Tempered Affixes can roll within a certain range, adding an additional layer of probability and excitement to the crafting process. The developers have mentioned that the system will introduce a wide range of new and unique affixes, providing players with even more customization possibilities and alternative playstyles for their characters.

Blizzard explains the reason behind the cap on talent loadouts in response to player concerns. While the current limit of 10 loadouts may seem restrictive for players who engage in various content, there are addon solutions available to overcome this limitation. These addons allow players to save and manage more loadouts on their own device.
