Assassination Rogue in Dragonflight & War Within: A Reflective Analysis and Future Wish List

January 23, 2024 5 minutes

With the sun setting on Dragonflight and The War Within on the horizon, our Assassination Rogue Writer, Whispyr, offers a retrospective highlighting Assassination's journey in Dragonflight and shares their hopes for the spec's next evolution with a War Within Wishlist. Assassination has seen a lot of ups and downs throughout Dragonflight, receiving a new capstone in 10.0.5, as well as a bigger talent tree rework alongside the other rogue specs in 10.2. Let's take a look back at how the spec has evolved, talk about what's working well (and not working well), before diving into a small wishlist for the Hero Talents coming with The War Within. Before we start, I do want to thank those who have helped share their views on the spec over the last weeks. Having another view on a topic helps the feedback cycle immensely and drives conversation. I appreciate you all so much for it.

Reflecting on the Past

Assassination going into Dragonflight had its issues, but it had strong roots in some core foundational concepts that drove players to the spec. A lot of the spec at the start of 10.0 could be summarized as follows:

  • Strengths

  • Great boss damage in raids

  • Weaknesses

  • Lack of AoE damage and limited target selection
  • Simplistic rotation with little skill expression

  • Mythic+ Woes

Going into 10.0, the situation for Assassination in Mythic+ was quite dire. The spec had serious issues in the talent tree trying to juggle single target and AoE talents, often failing at doing either successfully without severely hampering the other. While the lack of AoE was addressed, it wouldn't be resolved until 10.2 with a talent rework. For the first half of the expansion, this left Assassination relying heavily on a single button solution, resulting in a lackluster rotational experience. Additionally, in raids, Assassination excelled at boss damage but struggled to contribute beyond that.

A Big Step Forward

Going into 10.2, Assassination received significant changes that addressed many of its weaknesses and improved its gameplay experience.

  • Strengths

  • Strong priority damage and improved AoE capabilities
  • More engaging energy management gameplay

  • Weaknesses

  • Confusing talent choices and lack of clear best rotation
  • Long ramp-up time in Mythic+
  • Over-reliance on Kingsbane for damage output in raids

  • Mythic+ Improvements

In Mythic+, Assassination saw a resurgence in its strong priority damage with the addition of Caustic Spatter allowing for increased AoE damage. This, combined with other talent changes, opened up various viable talent builds, providing more flexibility and choice for players. However, the myriad of build and talent options also created confusion for some players, leading to feelings of being overwhelmed.

  • Ramp time woes

One of the biggest issues players encountered with Assassination in Mythic+ was the long ramp-up time required to reach maximum damage potential. The reliance on Kingsbane and the nature of the spec's cooldown management made it difficult to optimize damage output in shorter encounters. Players began developing accelerated openers to shorten the ramp time, but this strategy didn't always align with the optimal rotation, resulting in less-than-ideal gameplay experiences.

  • All roads lead to Kingsbane

In raids, Assassination found success with strong burst damage and improved AoE capabilities provided by Caustic Spatter. However, the reliance on Kingsbane as the primary damage dealer became a source of frustration for some players. The talent choices and gameplay rotation heavily revolved around maximizing Kingsbane's damage potential, leaving little room for alternative playstyles or talents.

  • Looking for Alternatives

While Assassination saw improvements in Dragonflight, there were still areas that could be further explored and enhanced to provide a more engaging and diverse gameplay experience.

  • Old Poison

Poisons, a longtime staple of the Rogue class, had become stagnant and lacked gameplay depth. Adding new mechanics and choices related to poisons could inject new life into Assassination and differentiate it from other specs.

  • Space to Innovate

Exploring ways to make combo points more interesting and rewarding could add depth to the gameplay. Currently, Assassination's combo point system primarily revolves around filling the bar and using finishers, with few additional interactions or decisions. Finding new ways to utilize combo points creatively could make gameplay more engaging and strategic.

Hope for the Future

While Assassination has made significant strides in Dragonflight, there is still room for improvement. The upcoming Hero Talents in The War Within present an opportunity to address some of the spec's current shortcomings and introduce new gameplay elements.

Conceptually, there are two areas that could benefit from further exploration:

  • Deathstalker

This hybrid Hero Specialization combining Assassination and Subtlety could showcase explosive burst gameplay and incorporate stealth effects and cooldown-centric mechanics. Existing talents such as Master Assassin, Nightstalker, Lethality, Cold Blood, and Shadow Dance could be expanded upon to enhance this hybrid playstyle.

  • Fatebound

Fatebound, the hybrid Hero Specialization combining Assassination and Outlaw, could focus on resource management and methodical play. Abilities like Improved Adrenaline Rush and unique combo point interactions could add depth and complexity to the gameplay experience.

Additionally, revamping poisons and exploring new ways to utilize combo points could further enhance Assassination's gameplay depth and provide more strategic choices for players.

Overall, Assassination has made significant progress in Dragonflight, and the future looks promising. By continuing to prioritize cool and innovative ideas, the spec can evolve into a more engaging and flourishing gameplay experience. As a Rogue community member and enthusiast, I have high hopes for the direction Assassination is heading.
