Maria Hamilton's Narrative Interview: Unveiling Dalaran, Xal'atath, and Azeroth with Taliesin & Evitel

In an exclusive interview, WowCarry had the opportunity to sit down with Maria Hamilton, the Associate Design Director, to discuss the challenges of planning a captivating narrative spanning three expansions in the World Soul Saga. The World Soul Saga is an expansive story, drawing elements from previous expansions and presenting them as a trilogy. This unique approach allows each expansion to have its own satisfying story, while also pushing forward the overarching narrative.

The idea of creating a trilogy was a departure from their usual approach, but it provides the perfect opportunity for better pacing and foreshadowing. Knowing the story they want to tell in advance, even though they are simultaneously developing three expansions, allows them to set up elements that will be resolved over a longer period of time. The goal is to release the expansions faster than in the past, creating excitement and anticipation for what comes next.

Continuity is the biggest challenge faced by the team, considering the scale of the project. To ensure everyone is on the same page, a significant amount of coordination and communication is required. The art team is already hard at work on the third expansion, The Last Titan, creating breathtaking creature and environmental concept art. Meanwhile, the world builders are dedicating themselves to Midnight, building maps for other designers to craft quests and spawn creatures. It is crucial for the narrative designers to construct spaces that can effectively tell the planned stories, while remaining adaptable if plans change.

Maria hinted that she knows the ending of the World Soul Saga, but she kept mum on the details. The team is well aware of the starting point, the stakes being set up, and the final destination. With a solid story backbone, players will encounter new allies and enemies as they progress through the saga, with each step having been meticulously plotted out.

Raising the Stakes

The World Soul Saga begins with the Fate of Dalaran, a questline designed to emphasize the risks involved, introduce the enemies, and establish the motives behind the pursuit. The full introduction, accessible at launch, will provide more intricate details than what players have already discovered. The team spent considerable time contemplating how this narrative would compare to previous controversial moments, such as the Burning of Teldrassil or the Battle for Lordaeron. Their intention is to avoid rehashing those emotions, but they believe the risks they are taking are well worth it, as the threat affects all factions and races. The fall of Dalaran signifies a loss for everyone.

As the World Soul Saga progresses, players should brace themselves for the unexpected. Anything can happen as the story unfolds.

Xal'atath, Player Choice, and Ambiguity

The upcoming expansion, Season of Discovery, has been teasing a shadowy figure known as Xal'atath. Although Shadow Priests are already familiar with her, the team intends to ensure that other players understand her role as well. There is no doubt that she is up to something, but her intentions remain shrouded in mystery for now.

Blizzard aims to create a self-contained narrative that does not require players to engage with other games or supplementary material to understand the story. Throughout The War Within, players may encounter hints and gain some insight into Xal'atath's motives. However, Maria cryptically declared that she is unsure if giving players a choice to support or oppose Xal'atath would have any real impact on the game world.

The team values player agency and meaningful choices but acknowledges the challenges of implementing such mechanics in a shared world rather than a single-player RPG. There is always a risk of player divergence, making it difficult to bring everyone back to the same page. Nonetheless, this is something they consider extensively.

  • The Earthen and Their Subtle Differences

Delving into the fascinating lore of the Earthen, it becomes apparent that they are more distinct from regular Dwarves than most people realize. Their unique surge ability adds an intriguing layer to their gameplay, and the dynamic between their three different sub-groups provides a refreshing difference in perspectives.

  • Ambiguity Surrounding Azeroth's Nature

Fans have been buzzing about the ambiguous ending cinematic of Amirdrassil, which sees the dragonflights regaining their power. This ambiguous conclusion has fueled speculation that Azeroth may not actually be a Titan. However, Maria chose to remain tight-lipped on the matter, leaving fans to ponder this intriguing possibility.
