Profession Profitability in Dragonflight: Weekly Wrap-Up 312

January 28, 2024 3 minutes

Welcome to the 312th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up! In this blog post, we will be discussing the profitability of professions in the Dragonflight expansion. We will also be exploring simple ways for beginners to make gold and the habits that can help you build a successful gold-making mindset.

Is Dragonflight the Least Profitable Expansion?

Dragonflight is an expansion that offers a multitude of features and activities to enhance players' experience in the game. However, when it comes to professions, the question arises: are they as profitable as other aspects of the expansion? Making a profit is not only important for enjoyment but also a driving factor for many players.

When Dragonflight was first released, players engaged in various activities such as farming for knowledge points, completing quests for consortium rep, and hunting treasures to gain mettle. Crafting the best profession tools and creating spreadsheets to calculate profits became the norm. However, many players found that professions like enchanting and alchemy yielded very little to no profit at all. Some did manage to make a profit by crafting blacksmithing weapons through personal orders, but the process was tedious and time-consuming.

The introduction of a complex crafting order system, which required the use of addons to navigate, was not entirely new. Similar systems were previously implemented with the Auction House and addons like TSM and Auctionator. However, the crafting work order system shifted the power of determining prices to the customers, requiring them to understand the crafting process and dictate the price based on their own perception. It was like going to a shop and determining the price of a chocolate bar based on how you thought it was made!

Some players fully embraced this system and were able to make money by providing their knowledge and guidance to others. By explaining how the crafting system worked, they were able to charge fees for their services and establish a reputation as reliable crafters. This customer service approach allowed them to thrive and make gold. However, for many players, professions were meant to be a means of making gold through farming and grinding, without the need for extensive social interaction.

Barter Bricks in Patch 10.2.5

Penguin2gthas created a great video highlighting theBarter Brick quests introduced in Patch 10.1. These quests provide an opportunity to engage in various markets and bypass the complex work order system. It's a simple and accessible way to make gold without the need for extensive knowledge or social interaction.

Gold Making for Noobs

Are you new to gold-making and looking for a place to start? Here are some suggestions:

  1. Solo old dungeons and raids and sell valuable loot on the auction house.
  2. Level up gathering professions like skinning, mining, and herbalism to gather valuable resources.
  3. Level up cooking and fishing and sell recipes on the auction house.
  4. Consider leveling up crafting professions like leatherworking, enchanting, tailoring, blacksmithing, alchemy, and inscription.
  5. Learn about the Tradeskillmaster addon, which can help you manage your auctions and maximize your profits.

Starting small is key. Many successful gold makers began by selling simple items like first aid kits and cooking recipes. By gradually expanding their knowledge and experience, they were able to diversify their income streams and build a profitable gold-making business.
