December 20, 2023 4 minutes

In a recent blog post by Mike Ybarra, the President of Blizzard Entertainment, he takes a moment to reflect on the accomplishments and growth of Blizzard games throughout 2023. As the year comes to a close, Ybarra expresses his gratitude to the community and shares exciting plans for the upcoming year.

Blizzard Games in 2023

Ybarra starts by highlighting the efforts of the World of Warcraft team, who continuously provided new and exciting content for both the Dragonflight and Classic versions of the game. With an increasing number of players joining the WoW community, now surpassing the launch of Dragonflight, the team managed to keep the game engaging and enjoyable for all. Furthermore, the WoW community united to raise an impressive USD $1.5 million for BlueCheck Ukraine, showcasing their dedication to a great cause.

Hearthstone, Blizzard's popular digital card game, launched three expansions during the year. Each expansion offered unique and immersive experiences, from attending a music festival to harnessing the power of the Titans, and finally exploring the heart of the Badlands. The addition of Tyler Bielman as the new game director brought fresh ideas and inspiration to the Hearthstone team.

Another exciting launch was Warcraft Rumble, which debuted at BlizzCon. This chaotic and joy-filled game quickly captivated millions of players worldwide, allowing them to revel in the thrilling madness.

Diablo IV had an incredibly successful launch, and the Season of Blood showcased the team's dedication to evolving the game alongside its players. Additionally, Diablo Immortal celebrated its first anniversary by introducing a new class, the Blood Knight, which was the first in nearly a decade for the Diablo universe.

Overwatch 2 made history by celebrating Pride in-game, demonstrating Blizzard's commitment to inclusivity. The game also participated in epic crossovers with other franchises such as Diablo, One-Punch Man, and LE SSERAFIM, creating memorable and unique experiences for players.

The 2023 Blizzard Community By The Numbers

Ybarra then shifts focus to the Blizzard community and its remarkable growth throughout the year. Blizzard's cultural initiatives, including the relaunch of Blizzard University (BlizzU) and the appointment of Pamela Burga as the new DE&I Officer, aimed to foster a sense of inclusivity and unity within the company. These initiatives led to hundreds of trainings and events, with a total of 11,282 sign-ups, strengthening internal communities and promoting education among the teams.

Blizzard also prioritized accessibility in their games, particularly with World of Warcraft and Diablo IV. Their efforts were recognized with a nomination in the Innovation in Accessibility category at The Game Awards. By incorporating features such as dexterity assistance, text assistance, and vision assistance, Blizzard ensures that their games are enjoyable for as many players as possible.

Blizzard not only focuses on internal growth but also actively engages with peers in the industry. They participate in conferences, such as GDC and the 2023 D.I.C.E Summit, and contribute to research initiatives like the Design Playbook for Digital Thriving. These collaborations allow Blizzard to share knowledge, learn from others, and shape the future of the gaming industry.

Blizzard in 2024

Looking ahead to 2024, Ybarra emphasizes the massive year approaching for the Warcraft universe. With significant anniversaries, including 30 years since the first Warcraft game, 20 years of World of Warcraft, 10 years of Hearthstone, and the one-year anniversary of Warcraft Rumble, Blizzard has exciting plans for its various communities.

The first installment of the Worldsoul Saga, titled The War Within, will be released, immersing players in a new chapter of the Warcraft adventure. Hearthstone will introduce a new way to play Battlegrounds with friends through the Duos game mode. Additionally, players can anticipate more expansions with incredible themes and mechanics, adding depth and excitement to the game.

Warcraft Rumble will embark on new seasons, bringing forth fresh minis, challenging Raids, and more opportunities for fun in the world of Azeroth. Diablo IV will continue its journey with new seasons and release its first expansion, Vessel of Hatred. This expansion will feature the captivating story of Mephisto and Neyrelle, unveiling a never-before-seen class in the Diablo universe.

Overwatch 2 enthusiasts can anticipate the arrival of three new heroes, including Venture, a hero codenamed Space Ranger, and an unrevealed tank. The new Clash mode and a reworked Competitive mode are also on the horizon, promising thrilling gameplay and enhanced competition.

Ybarra concludes the post by expressing his gratitude to the community for their continuous support. He assures players that Blizzard's partnership with Microsoft Gaming opens up exciting possibilities for the future. As they enter this new era, Blizzard aims to continue crafting genre-defining games and legendary worlds for players to enjoy and share.

With a promising year ahead, Ybarra and the Blizzard team look forward to welcoming players to new adventures and experiences in 2024. Stay tuned for more updates!
