Season of Discovery: Molten Core and Level 50 Raid Now Available with 20-Player Size

Blizzard has recently made an exciting announcement regarding raid sizes in their upcoming Season of Discovery expansion for Original World of Warcraft. In a surprising move, they have revealed that both the iconic Molten Core raid and an unannounced level 50 raid will be 20-player size raids, a departure from the previously stated 40-player raids. This decision has sparked discussion within the community as Blizzard seeks to bridge the gap between smaller 10-player raids and larger 40-player raids.

Raid Size at Level 60

One of the hottest topics of debate in the World of Warcraft community currently is the raid size at level 60. Many players have been voicing their opinions on this matter, prompting Blizzard to provide some clarity on what to expect in the upcoming phases.

The unannounced level 50 raid will have a 20-player format, providing a more focused and intimate raiding experience. This change aims to strike a balance between the smaller, more manageable groups and the larger, more challenging raids.

Similarly, the legendary Molten Core raid will also be adjusted to a 20-player format for the Season of Discovery. This decision reflects Blizzard's desire to make the initial raiding experience more accessible and easier to form pick-up groups for.

Looking beyond the currently announced raids, Blizzard is still in discussions regarding the raid sizes for the later tiers of Season of Discovery. They understand the importance of establishing a cohesive raiding structure and are actively considering the feedback and preferences of the community in their decision making.

When initially conceptualizing Season of Discovery, Blizzard envisioned a version of World of Warcraft that would include the iconic 40-player raids. The scale and grandeur of these massive raids were seen as an integral part of the Original WoW experience. However, the practicality of scaling them within the aggressive development timeline and the potential strain it could put on communities led to the decision to introduce 10-player raids for the early level-up content.

As Blizzard has observed players engaging with the game and building communities, they have come to realize that transitioning from one or two 10-player raid groups to a full 40-player raid might pose challenges for some communities. Hence, the decision to implement a "bridging" strategy to gradually transition from small raids to larger raid sizes.

While it would be theoretically possible to overhaul all 40-player raids into 20-player raids, this approach would require significant effort and could hinder the implementation of other planned features and content for the post-60 Season of Discovery. Blizzard is currently conducting investigations to determine the feasibility of such a change and to understand the limitations of the Original WoW data framework.

Blizzard also acknowledges that certain raid features, such as Flex Raiding, which are available in modern WoW, cannot be implemented in the Original WoW version due to technical constraints. Despite these limitations, Molten Core stands out as a unique raid that can be simplified mechanically and structurally to accommodate a 20-player experience without compromising its essence and integrity.

Speculations for the Unannounced 20-Player Raid

With the introduction of the unannounced level 50 raid, speculation is running rampant within the World of Warcraft community. Many players are speculating that this raid could potentially be a new wing of Scarlet Monastery or the long-teased Karazhan Crypts, which were first showcased at BlizzCon 2023. While Blizzard has yet to confirm any specific details, the anticipation for this new raid is palpable, and players are eagerly awaiting further announcements.
