The Cost of Achieving Faction Balance in Season of Discovery
Blizzard's recent decision to introduce some changes in WoW Classic Season of Discovery has sparked quite a bit of controversy among players. One notable change was the decision to hide realm information and disallow name reservations until the launch of the season. But did this approach actually work? According to the developers, there has been an average 3.7% delta between Alliance and Horde players, suggesting that the desired faction balance has been achieved. However, there may have been some unintended consequences as well.
The Controversial Decision
Senior Game Producers, Tom Ellis and Josh Greenfield, have been actively engaging with the player community on Twitter, explaining the reasoning behind the decision to hide server names and information. They highlighted the issues with players "overplanning" and unofficially designating certain servers as "good" or "bad" based on this information. By not revealing realm information before the launch, Blizzard aimed to create a more level playing field for all players.
Interestingly, this obfuscation may have been unnecessary, as the launch only included a few servers, limiting the number of choices for players looking for specific community rulesets. In the initial launch, there was only one normal realm and one RP-PvP realm, as compared to the numerous servers available at the launch of Classic WoW. Therefore, even without the hidden information, players had fewer alternative choices.
However, for players who were able to be present at the launch time, such as streamers and hardcore players, this information restriction did not pose a significant challenge. They were able to quickly adapt and plan based on emerging information, regardless of Blizzard's intent. The real inconvenience was faced by those who couldn't log in until later in the evening when queues and server congestion were at their peak. This resulted in general confusion and frustrations as they found themselves cut off from friends who had already created characters earlier in the day. In response to the overpopulation, Blizzard implemented restrictions on creating new characters for overpopulated factions or even locked certain realms completely.
While the intention behind the decision was to create a more seamless playing experience for everyone, it is unfortunate that some regular players had their agency compromised, as they were unable to choose where and with whom they wanted to play. On the other hand, more established groups were still able to coordinate and adapt to their preferences effectively.
To their credit, Blizzard managed to address at least one of the issues quickly, reporting zero NA queue times by the weekend. Although overcrowding remained a problem in some low-level areas, many of the initial issues have been resolved, allowing players to dive into the game. However, the choice of realm and the players they will encounter is no longer solely in their hands.
Striving for Faction Balance
Faction balance has always been a topic of discussion in WoW Classic, and Blizzard has acknowledged the player feedback on this matter. With the Season of Discovery, they are trying something new to ensure faction balance on PvP realms. This Season's PvP realms have been designed to maintain faction balance as they grow, addressing the concerns of players who felt that one faction had an overwhelming advantage.
While this approach seems promising, there is a potential drawback that players should be aware of. If one faction becomes significantly more dominant on a PvP realm, Blizzard may temporarily limit faction selection on that realm to restore balance. The goal of the Season of Discovery is to provide a fun and smooth experience for all players, and Blizzard is prepared to make changes if necessary.
This marks a new direction for Blizzard and an exciting experiment in maintaining faction balance. The feedback from the player community has been taken seriously, and Blizzard aims to create an enjoyable and fair playing environment for all. Only time will tell whether these changes result in a more balanced and engaging WoW Classic experience.
